I am absolutly fascinated by the CB1000R and I am about to buy a new 2011 model which I found at a local dealership in North Carolina, USA. I think I am forgetting my loyalty to my beloved Kawasaki Z1000.

In doing my pre-purchase due diligence I was told that the annual insurance premium for the CB1000R would be just as hight as that for the CBR1000RR Fireblade (in the U.S.)! Can anybody confirm that or--better--give me a contradicting example based on your own experience?

In the U.S. the CB1000R is classified as Allrounder with "just" 125HP (92kW), while the CBR1000RR Fireblade is a Supersport bike with 177HP (130kW). How can they cost the same insurance? The local agent says it's because they have the same motor. That is true and wrong. Mechanically it's the same motor, but displacement, mapping, characteristics and hence performace are distinctly different, with the CB1000R being much "tamer". I would expect it to be insured at the same level as the Kawasaki Z1000 or Triumph Speed Triple, but not at 200% (!) the rate which is what you pay for the Fireblade.

Any insights? Any facts that help me get a better insurance? -- Thanks!

I had similar issues while I was researching as well.......I am really amazed any insurance agent would know the cbr and cb share a motor, unless they are an avid sport biker.

Every insurance company I looked at didn't even have a listing for the CB1000R. All the companies I tried to get quotes for did not initially show the CB1000R just the CBR1000RR. When I first got all the quotes it was down right ridiculous, between $1500-2500/YR....obviously I pointed out the error seeing as this is a sport bike & not a super sport. I was able to get some companies to actual make a listing or reclassify the bike entirely. In the end the price came down considerably but is still higher than any other bike in it's class for me. (ie. z1000, speed triples, fz1, etc) For example I was able to get my current company to insure my bike with full coverage @ $600.00-700.00/YR. I am not exactly sure since I was able to add a second motorcycle to my plan for practically free, my insurance actually went up without the second bike. Just shows you how screwy insurance really is, my insurance agent was even amazed.

So to compare every other bike I looked at (ie. z1000, speed triples, fz1, etc) was generally around $300.00-$500.00/YR. The CB1000R was always more expensive even though most of the other bikes actually have larger displacement engines & more horsepower/torque! Possibly because of the rarity and cost of the parts due to this?

Just make sure whom every you are receiving a quote from leaves off the "R" on "CB" & "1000". People who don't know bikes generally just hear "CBRRRRRR1000RRRRRRR" lol

My 2 cents and my experience....obviously these #'s will differ greatly between individuals. I am interested to know what everyone else in the US pays?

AAA has reasonable rates as long as you have a good record. I shopped around and also got the CBR treatment like Broc said. It also helps to leave off the "R" so they don't put you into the race replica category.

I went through the same problem also... I almost didn't purchase the bike because the insurance was so high
through progressive, Allstate, state farm and alabama under writers and I have clean recorded and it was going to
cost 2,000.00 a year through them! Luckily I remembered about GMAC insurance I had several years ago on a sports
car I had and they were cheaper then anyone else..so I gave them a call and got a quote and I about feel out the chair
when they told me the price.... I asked the guy if he was reading it right... I pay 503.00 a year for full coverage!!
Needless to say I bought the bike later that day and call GMAC back and signed up!

I use american family and my insurance is $370 a year I thought that was very good I dont know if it actually made a difference but I stressed the point that it is not a 1000cc but a 998cc which I belive puts it in a lower price class.

I just got insurance with progressive and full coverage for $405 / year. I have been told that they insure toys such as boats, motorcycles, jet ski's, etc. and provide the special rates. Not sure if that is 100% accurate but thought I would pass that along.

I'm not sure if this will help but I told them that it was a CB1000 (left off the R). I then also told them and it was 996 CC. The VIN was not in their system so they based their rate off of the information that I provided to them. Worth a shot!
