Just checked this against previous CB1000 version.
Seems the earlier bike uses a much larger spindle?
18mm seems really skinny by comparison....can anyone throw light on this please?

Don't think the new one is 18mm
If you look into the hub from the r/h side, it appears to be iro 28mm?
The 19mm hex drive appears to be some sort of trim cap?

Do you know if it need removing to fit a s/s paddock stand?
Also, the manual...is it online...do you work for Honda?

Also, the depth of the hole is limited.
I've contacted Honda UK
I don't think they have much idea tbh.

Stand needs to slide in from l/h side of s/arm
18mm seems really thin when you look at it.
I have a Harris stand, so will look to have a pin machined up for it.

I already hav an ABBA stand.
OK for general maintenance, but a bit fiddly to use on a day to day basis.
Paddock stand is miles quicker to mount/demount bike.

Neither have an idea, and will not give a definitive answer.
Doesn't exactly instill confidence...

Hub centre hole is not 18mm.
More like 18.4mm?
The shoulder that the pin acts on is only a few cm deep.
Worrying.
Meanwhile the silence from Honda is deafening.

Spoke to my dealer, who suggested I use the sidestand on one side, and a trolley jack under the engine casing on the other to lift.
What the actual f*ck!

when i picked up bike today, dealer was also WTF?
they're not sure how they would lift it in the shop to do rear tyre either.. and will look for a solution.

wheel hub centre is smaller diameter than the spindle inside, so is not like you can pass a larger pin in from RHS.

but, possibly a long rod, larger on rim side, slid all the way through, then lifted by normal 2 sided stand? seems dodgy....

was thinking perhaps a frame that bolts to pillion peg mount points... then lift with engine crane.. but not sure the subframe is strong enough. would be lifting about 60% of the weight at a guess = 130kg.. = less than rider+pillion...


at EICMA they seem to have just shoved a bolt all the way through

I'm quite liking the R&G soloution.
Simple enough.
Then use an abba when you need the wheel out.
I looked at the owners manual so see what Honda recommend for supporting the bike for wheel removal.
A Hoist.
Fu*king SERIOUSLY Honda?

took some measurements today.

at the front, hole in triple for a head stand is 13mm, so a 1/2" pin works

could easily make an R&G style through axle thing... 18mm bar, machined nylon bit to support from rim (only 5mm load bearing on that side), needle roller bearing and guides at each end for a conventional paddock stand...
note that it needs to be longer on RHS to centre the weight and be stable
I will go down this route, if i can find a suitable 18mm bar (long high tensile bolt? conventional bike axle bolt??), and make it so it is inserted from rim side

for changing tyres, I think there is also an option to use an engine hoist from the top mounting points of the rear shock. (Abba stand not available in Australia, plus I have engine crane..)
would need to remove the air duct plastic things, but that's just 2 bolts/screws each side

C.O.G is below shock top mount, so should be stable, even with front head stand

OldC....thanks for taking the time to put that up.
Really, really useful, and just the job for the R&G route.
I really like the speed and simplicity of paddock stands, but I've come to the conclusion that Honda design in Italy were not on the case when it came to thinking through the logistics of us DIY'ers getting that back wheel out.
The deafening silence from Honda on this issue is evidence of this.
So, although a little more fiddly, I guess the good old ABBA is the go to stand at this time?
Just ordered a pair of CB specific frame plugs for mine.

haha, it's like they just plain forgot about lifting up the rear of the bike!
luckily my front stand has a 1/2" base sized pin for the adaptors to go onto, otherwise that would not fit either. still need to flex the mudguard out of the way to get it in though :(

what do the Abba frame plugs look like?
which holes do they go into??


the spindle assembly i'm thinking of.. will have all the stuff at RHS permanently mounted on the bolt. (can get M18x300 and M18x350 high tensile bolts off the shelf)
slide it through from rim side, then put on washers and bearing, and do up the nut. (would be massive butterfly nut to make easier)
take less than a minute to put it in, then lift with normal stand, then take out after cleaning/lubing chain

only the bearing outers are free to move, so everything else rotates with the wheel,and the bearings are stationary on the stand.
means welding up new attachments for the stand, but that's easy

Playing around with the feasability of having an 18mm (think it's a little bigger?) pin turned for my paddockstand.
ALSO....a sleeve with an internal 18mm hole, turned to slide in from the r/h side.
That way, the pin would have loads of meat to sit on.
What do you think OldC?

Yep, you're right.
If for instance the centre wheel hole dia is less that the hub (thereby preventing sliding in a sleeve) what's to stop taking the wheel off, THEN inserting the sleeve, then replace the wheel.
In other words, just leave it in?
If it was ali, it'd have minimal cost weight wise..?
Fully genius eh?
