Hi everyone. I’m new as you can see. I’m hoping to find some answers to an issue I’m having.

5 years ago my dad bought a 2012 cb1kr that had 1200 miles on it from a Harley dealership. It was bone stock. He bought a bunch of stuff for it but basically never rode it. I bought it from him 2 weeks ago with 1279 miles on it. However, it now has steering stabilizer, levers, lines, slip on exhaust, etc.

Now the issue it’s having…. When it’s “warm” (200ish) from riding in town it slugs really bad when trying to take off. But if you ride on the highway it maintains 165f and if you have to stop and turn off onto another road while it’s still in that temp it doesn’t slug. After a few phone calls I was told that the factory can/area my dad replaced had a cat in it. And that I now need a power commander and tuned for that cat delete. It’s a dekelvic slip on I believe? But apparently the cat is gone now because of it?

At first we thought it might have been bad gas? So I drained the tank, put a half gallon of 93+1/2oz of Lucas fuel system cleaner, shook it around and let it sit (without starting). 10 minutes later dumped another gallon of 93 in it and shook it around, let it sit. Then topped it off with 93 and shook it. Then rode the entire tank out on the highway at 65mph/4200rpm.

Filled it again with 93, ran that tank out. Still has that stumble glug glug when it’s warm. I have a brand new set of ngk 7556 for it, if that’s what it needs? But are there any other ideas? It only has 1680 miles on it now so I wouldn’t think it could be plugs? Couldn’t be gas? But did they really have a cat that got deleted and it’s basically trying to flood itself when it’s 200 degrees and between 1-2k rpm? Because once it gets past 2k the whole bike is there again!

Thanks for all input, I’m kinda lost here.

I can provide videos of it on start up etc. Whats weird is when it reaches temp (I see it’s hottest at 206) it runs the worst? When it’s warm it idles at 1k, and if you twist the throttle there is a hesitation. If it’s 160 area it idles 1200ish and has no hesitation.

Yup, the cat is gone. FYI, the cat was not inside the muffler, they are separate components.
I had an Akrapovič open slip-on (cat delete) on my 2014. Akrapovič has a warning on their website that a Power Commander must be used or engine damage can occur with this setup. Akrapovič even provided two downloadable maps they created. I don't know if a PC will cure your issue but the bike needs one regardless. Here's my bike the day I traded it in.

FYI, Honda recommends a pump octane number of 86 or higher. I ran regular in my 2014 and now in my SC80. All my CBRs required premium.
Here's the online owner's manual if you don't have a hard copy:
Thank you for your help. I don’t have much experience with bike aside from riding them and my dad always owned Harley’s but he bought the cb because it was practically brand new for 4 grand and he liked the look of it. He rode it home said it sounded like a scooter and didn’t like the rear fender. It snowballed and he bought a bunch of stuff for it and rode it once more and didn’t like how you “sit up”. So it sat… for a long time.

Then he offered it to me for a good price. The first day of riding I noticed it bogging. Then tried everything I mentioned. It runs fantastic after you take off. Taking off is a struggle. I tried to find the stock exhaust to throw back on it before buying a commander but apparently they are worth everything in existence. I made some other calls and they said the same thing it needs a commander.

Also as far as the gas. Where I live we have 87,89,91,93. My Acura requires 91 so I figure that’s the minimum. If I go 5 minutes down the highway I can get 108 or 118. But it’s not a cannondale or a boosted engine so I don’t figure it needs that high of octane.

I spose I’ll just let it sit till I get a commander. The last thing I want to do is hurt a brand new bike by bending a valve or something. From the way it runs and my experience from quads and dirtbikes it feels like it has just a tad to much fuel down low? But I could be wrong? I’m just going to buy the commander and go from there. I love riding it and don’t want to detonate a brand new bike because it’s not tuned right.

Thanks for the help again.

Removing the cat and adding a less restrictive muffler makes the bike run lean. It's possible to burn the pistons. Letting a bike sit is about the worst thing for it, especially if the fuel contains ethanol. You may be having a problem with the injectors from the bike sitting. I doubt the rough running is exhaust related.
My point about using octane rated higher than recommended is that it's a waste of money. The bike doesn't care what your wallet is doing. ;)

You could try adding Sea Foam to the fuel (follow directions), but since you tried fuel system cleaner it might not solve the issue.

hey, sorry for late reply. I ended up getting sick. I had called a motorcycle tuner near me and explained everything. He had pulled up the exhaust and we both seen that that it stated no tuning is required. And after explaining the problem he was leaning towards a dirty injector seeing as the problem only happens when taking off from a dead stop.

He told me to put a little fuel system cleaner in there and run it out, put the brand new plugs I have for it (because the ones in it could be oxidized from sitting for so long).if it still doesn’t come out of it then bring it in. He said if it was a “big” issue it would do it all through in all gears. Not just taking off from a stop in first.

I got some foam, I have to wait about 10 days for a warm enough day to ride again. So it’s going to be a while for an update.
