Has anyone had insurance quotes yet? I used The Bike Insurer to work it out and it actually came up around the same as I'm paying on my Hornet at the moment, which is nice. Amusingly the cheapest fully comprehensive policy was cheaper than the cheapest third party fire and theft policy.

Considering that I've only been riding for two years, and that I've had to claim on my insurance 18 months ago for damage caused to the bike when it simply fell over, I was quite happy to see that insurance would cost me £387.46, which as I say is around what I'm paying on the Hornet already. I'll give my insurer a call tomorrow to see if they can match it.

What happens now anyway? If my insurer can't give me a decent quote, do I have to continue with their policy if I'm changing the bike? If I cancel (if I can) and start again I assume my next years no-claims is delayed by another few months? I've only just renewed my Hornet's insurance, so it's not like it'll be adding loads of time on, but I've not looked at moving my insurance mid-term before. Can I even do it?

Funny you should say about insurance the dealers gave me a hand full of cards to try phoned the Honda one only today first quote.
through Honda insurance (HYWAY).
£230.00 fully comp and protected no claims
£300 excess
seems quite good will try some more.

Ant, you don't have to stay with the same insurer but to gain an extra years NCD you do have to see it through to it's expiry. Also most insurers don't accept NCD if they have overlapped with other policies, so be aware of that if you decide to just let the insurance elapse.

If you do cancel the policy then you are unlikely to get much cash back as a refund, plus there may be an additional cancellation fee. Generally I have stayed with the same insurer when changing bikes and then gone elsewhere at renewal.

That's not bad Bez. My first year with Bennetts was cheaper than I expected, but they tend to screw you over on renewals. Make sure you get fully comp too, don't make the mistake I made on my first Hornet because I binned it a couple of months later and did £3200 damage to it. I ended up part chopping it for a slightly used (<500 mile) Hornet for £2700. I was lucky (kinda).

Yeah, thought it was, just saying, make sure you GET fully comp dude :thumbup

I don't want to suggest that you WILL have an accident, but if you do, even just tip the bike over, then you'll regret not taking fully comp. I mean, what kind of plank takes TPF&T on a brand new bike?

Depends on a lot of things... cost being the major one I think.

You have to weigh up the extra cost of fully comp as well as the generally higher excesses for your own accidental damage. I have only had FC insurance on my bikes for the past two years (so 6 years TPFT).

FC is also better if you are not to blame.... while the insurance companies are arguing over blame and costs you can still get your bike fixed at no cost to you (other than maybe the excess, which you would then claim back later from the third party).

In some cases though I think it is better to be TPFT with protected NCD (if you have a few years). In my experience most spills are relatively low speed drops, if you write your bike off and you are to blame then you'll most probably be so injured that replacing your bike will be the least of your worries.

My quotes yesterday came up with FC cheaper than TPF&T, and while I was recovering from cracked ribs, smashed elbow and dislocated little finger, my biggest concern was the damage I'd done to my bike, not me. OK, so we already know I'm odd, but I pretty much disagree as much as possible :box He he
