Macaristan is Hungary quote from the web from Quora website
“istan” is a suffix used at the end of many country names. It comes from Farsi (Persian) and means “land of”.
And “Macar” is pronounced “Majar”, as in “Magyar”. Therefore Macaristan is the land of Magyars. The Magyars are the people of Hungary.
It also explains why Greece is called “Yunanistan”. To Turks, it is the land of “Yunans” or “Ioanians”.
A better question is why Turks call Albania “Arnavutluk”, meaning the place of “Arnavuts”? I never understood this.
Thee doesn’t seem to be any standard for naming countries. At least the “luk” suffix in Arnavutluk is decidedly Turkish.
But, for example, England is “Ingiltere” , with “Ingil” clearly coming from “Ingiliz” (English), and “tere” coming from the Latin “terra” for “land”.
The suffix for Turkey - “Turk-iye” clearly comes from the Latin as well - “ia” being added for the names of places, as in Romania, Russia, Italia, etc.
