Gas consumption

With oil hitting $115 per barrel, I cannot help but noticed that the CB has one of the highest gas consumption out there for comparable engine size.
On average, I'm getting between 37-39 mpg.
If I make an effort to ride really leisurely and be cognizant of my right hand, I can hit 40-41 mpg but we are talking really unspirited/lame riding.

Just as a comparison with my other bikes, I am getting around
  • 43 MPG for 2005 CBR1000RR
  • 46 mpg for 2018 CBR1000RR SP
  • 48 mpg for 2021 Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX (which has a larger engine)
What are the reasons for this engine behavior in the CB ? I thought the SC80 is a variant of the SC77 ?
I also noticed that the operating temperature of the Ninja runs a lot cooler than the Honda's.

How far are you riding with the last bar flashing to get almost 4 gallons in the tank?
Maybe 20 miles

I recently changed the exhaust and had my ECU remapped by EDR on my 2019, and now I get an average of about 28-29mpg. I don't recall what I got before, but I am sure it was more as I feel like I am forever filling it up now. I am going to write EDR and ask them about it as it seems like there was a significant change in fuel consumption and I want to make sure it's an expected change.
But boy, it isn't a desirable change :)

My twin turbo 400+ HP Q60 RS gets that :p

I get about 38-40mpg out of mine with Akra headers and can…
I'm used to my old Guzzis making 50+ mpg on the road. My other two Hondas, a 2015 VFR and a 2017 CB1100EX always return mid-50s and sometimes 60s. On the way back home thru Colorado this summer on the VFR, I checked the mileage between Montrose and Durango, with summer heat, spirited riding over the mountain passes and 75+ mph on the flats. The VFR returned 67 mpg!

So with that preface, I've had this notion that the NSC is not quite as thrifty with the petrol what with the higher revs, higher state of tune and so on. I made a moderate distance run this morning on the NSC. Altitude here is a minimum 5240', temp at the beginning was 40, with a high of 53 at the end of the ride. Appr. 20 miles of in-town riding and 60 miles of highway riding at 70-75 mph. Winds negligible. In 82.5 miles, the NSC used 1.62 gallons. That's 50.925 miles per gallon. Not bad!

I’ve only had my 2023 CB1000R for a week. I road it home roughly 100 miles and got 43 plus mpg. That was state route riding in and out towns with max speeds of 65 mph for about half the distance. The remainder was Interstate riding at 75 mph.
This past weekend I took a ride up Mt. Lemon in Tucson. AZ with my dad & brother. It was a 104 mile round trip. I filled it up to the top with 2.0 gallons. 52 mpg. I was hoping for 45ish, so I’m happy with that. I know that is definitely not indicative of the fuel mileage I can expect for my normal riding, but, it was a nice surprise.
The bike currently only has 300 miles on it, so the rpm’s are kept below 6k. I expect the fuel mileage to closer to 40 when I can give her the beans!
