CB1000R Cooling Issue

I got caught caught on a long narrow bridge yesterday inching and waiting with nowhere to bail and the temp got up to 132C (270F) and flashing RED. The Honda Type 2 50/50 coolant boils at 131C (270F) and I was spilling coolant out my overflow. The electric cooling fan in useless as it was running 100% of the time and could not level the temp out. Also it was 35C (95F) out on the the road as well. Never had this issue before.

Maybe looking at modifying to a higher velocity rad cooling fan. Anyone else almost burn down their bike?

That sucks. Never happened to me in Houston.
I had mine on track when it was high 30’s (Celsius) never had an issue, I drained the coolant and use water wetter instead, I find my bikes run cooler with it.

Thats interesting stuff. I am going that way, its on order! Thanks.

I'd use the premix
SUPERCOOL® EXTREME - 1/2 GALLON
Formerly known as Supercool® With WaterWetter®
Convenient, pre-mixed coolant for motorcycles, ATVs, karts etc. - pour and go
Blended with purified, deionized water and proper WaterWetter percentage

just don't forget since there's no glycol in there don't leave the bike out in freezing temps this winter. If the bike is stored in freezing temps you'll need to drain the system before.
I think you are right, thats what I ordered from Amazon, but somethings up with the cooling system. I contacted the Honda dealer this morning as it is still over heating from a cool startup. Cannot hold its 100C (212F) idle. Climbs to 125c (225F) after a few minutes with fan 100% on and unable to bring down. I am thinking the thermostat (1932-MKF-041) not opening to specification. Will see if warranty covers it.

Thats a first for me with all the Hondas I trashed over the years.

That would be my guess.
yah, there has to be something wrong in the cooling system. no matter what the outside temps, my fan comes on at about 102-103C and drags the (normal ) coolant temp back down to 97-98C. nothing close to what you're seeing, which is badly incorrect! full flush, to make sure there are no blockages, and thermostat check for sure!

here's what the service manual says about coolant system trouble:

COOLING SYSTEM
6-4
TROUBLESHOOTING
Engine temperature too high
• Faulty ECT sensor
• Thermostat stuck closed
• Faulty radiator cap
• Insufficient coolant
• Passage blocked in radiator, hoses or water jacket
• Air in system
• Faulty cooling fan motor
• Faulty fan control relay
• Faulty water pump
Engine temperature too low
• Faulty ECT sensor
• Thermostat stuck open
• Faulty fan control relay
Coolant leak
• Faulty water pump mechanical seal
• Deteriorated O-rings
• Faulty radiator cap
• Damaged or deteriorated cylinder head gasket
• Loose hose connection or clamp
• Damaged or deteriorated hose

seems like #1 or #2, eh?

good luck!

also, it's pretty easy to remove and test the thermostat on your own, so long as you have a reasonably accurate thermometer. you have to drain the coolant and remove the breather hose and siphon hose, then remove the mounting bolt and ECT ground wire, thenfinally take off the housing ( 2 bolts). then you can remove the thermostat and check in hot water. see below:

I've seen my bike get up to 224 F (107 C) when stopped in traffic. It got up to 228 F (109 C) idling in my garage. I wanted to see if it would get higher, but, it seems to level off there. Once moving, it drops back down to between 190 F (88 C) & 200 F (93 C). I've spoken with 2 different dealerships and they insist this is normal for the CB1000R. What you're experiencing, however, is clearly something different. No way should you be getting coolant temps that high. I would suspect the thermostat or water pump. If not one of those 2 then a possible blockage.

Done some testing on this saga and the thermostat is OK after testing it upon removal. Replaced it anyway as it was out with new one that that tested fine as well. ECT tests fine upon removal as well. I did play with adding a resistor connected with a switch up to the bars to trick the ECM that the engine is hotter than it actually is so the fan comes on around 90C (194F).

The most concerning part is the bike overheated due to low coolant. Cannot find a leak any where. I topped it up and went on a good ride in and out of traffic. It cooled fine and then let it cool and it was down and about 100ml (3.4 oz) of coolant from the top of rad cap. Repeated the process with the same results. I dumped the oil to send a sample out for testing as I am thinking the head gasket in blown on a new bike. Will do a home coolant test tomorrow as well. Waiting on test results to see and have Honda check it out.

Lets hope the 2022 CB1000R is not R.I.P.

Head gasket wouldn't be the end of the world either, but an engine running that hot might be running lean or have excessively retarded spark timing at idle exacerbating the heat issue.

Pretty unusual for something like that to happen out of the blue. IMO it's more likely a mechanical failure than electronic, especially since it's a relatively new bike and it's not throwing any codes.
