    Pillion seat mounted topbox.

As I will be using my CB1R for some long distance touring, I needed some kind of luggage solution.

Panniers is not an option for the bike, but I prefer hard cases (100% water proof and lockable), so I had to go for the topbox solution.

A standard topbox rack places the topbox "behind" the bike, which I don't like - it doesn't look good and it's not good for the handling of the bike to place weight that far back - so I got me an extra pillion seat and turned it in to an topbox carrier.

First I had to find out how far forward on the seat I could mount the base plate without the topbox touching my back while riding.

Then I removed the seat cover and cut away some of the padding to make the seat level for the base plate:

Then I spend some time finding the best places to bolt the plate to the seat - I ended doing it like this:

I'm pleased with the result - the mounting is rock solid, looks OK and now I can carry what I need on my rides around Eurpe.

Another good thing with the pillion seat solution is that it only takes 10 sec to switch pillion seats, and turn the bike from a good looking streetfighter into a OK looking touring bike

    WARNING!

I've just come home from a 7000km tour to Nordkapp.

The Bike did well (of course), but the bracket with the lock that secure the pillion seat, couldn't withstand the vibrations from a fully loaded top box.

It broke apart, but I was able to fix it with a piece of 2mm stainless steel. After I got home, I replaced the broken part, but left the steel reinforcement in place - the result is a very robust bracket, that I'm sure woun't break again.

    Before and after the fix:

    Re: Pillion seat mounted topbox.

I did a week in France with all the camping kit....... 55 Ltr Givi box mounted on Givi brackets (behind the bike) and a Ventura 51 Ltr Spada bag strapped to the pillion seat....

No handling issues, it worked a treat !

What capacity top box did you have mounted when the bracket broke? i have a 35L box and was thinking of doing the same mod to the pillion seat.

    Re: Pillion seat mounted topbox.

I use a GIVI V46 (46 l.) top box - the box was loaded with approx 10kg when the bracket broke.

The steel reinforcement is an easy and cheap preventive fix, that I would recommend to anyone mounting a top box to the pillion seat.

The Final result after the broken bracket was replaced:
