After clearing snow from my bike yesterday to ride back from work, and suffering horrible pain in my fingers that seemed to take ages to stop even after I'd arrived, I'm on the lookout for better winter gloves.

I don't want muffs or heated grips, so I accept that I'll never have warm hands, but would like to know what some of the better winter gloves are.

Currently using Frank Thomas Aqua Force, which after 30 mins of sleet, snow and rain resulted in cold/wet/frozen/painfu/almost numb fingers.

Any recommendations? Does anyone have experience with Held? http://www.getgeared.co.uk/HELD_2570_Fr ... ycle_Glove

To be fair they're usually pretty good, even when it's very cold and rainy they've been ok for commuting, but if it's freezing with heavy rain/sleet/snow etc forget it.

Not sure if yours are the same model, bought mine a couple of years ago and came across another aqua force online that looks different, so you may have a better set

I find the biggest problem with winter gloves is that if your fingers go all the way to the end then they compress and don't insulate properly, so I suppose you need some slightly over sized ones?

I can't recommend any though I'm afraid as I use a combination of 'intermediate' gloves and heated grips

Dan, mine are different and the specs on yours sound better so may well be warmer, let me know how you get on.

Antnee, the general advice, so I've been told, is (slightly) loose winter gloves so warm air gets trapped inside, otherwise as you said the ends will be quite cold. So it should be a comfortable fit as opposed to very snug.

Yeah, I'd agree 100% with that. My gloves are good enough to wear all year round with the heated grips running in the cold, but they fit snug so the ends of my fingers get cold when we have especially cold weather, like today :banghead The first time I've had to put my thermal lining back inside my jacket to keep warm, and tucked my scarf right up into my helmet. It's damned cold at 5:30am!

I bought 3 pairs of expensive winter gloves before I found a pair that were any good:

They're made by Bikers (gortex/leather/thinsulate and hard knuckle guard) and were about £90 from Dobles last winter. These combined with a seperate thin inner glove (either silk or a fine wool) seemed to do the job for me. This will be the first winter that I've had a bike with heated grips so my fingers should be toastie :D

I seem to remember a lot of the mags recommending Hein Gerick Pathan gloves, which are 2 finger gloves. Don't know if they still make them, though. Failing that, if you want to keep warm all through the winter, try Gerbing heated gloves. Much easier to wire up than heated grips
I've got a pr of the 2 fingered gloves, they are really good and allow your fingers extra room to keep the warmth circulating, Try not to walk about wiv em though, you'll look like a star trek aka vulcan fan/nerd!! ;)

I couldn't get on with the pathans too bulky and cumbersome. I have been using Belstaff Thermosport for the last few years and can recommend them if you can find any, good feel and warm. Also Spada WP gloves are very good but a bit bulkier than the Belstaffs (much more feel than the pathans though)
